The Name Behind the Faces

A popular phenomenon growing across the U.S. is the idea of doing something that you love for a purpose. Many times, athletes compete in honor of something or someone that they love to raise awareness and support for their passions. This year at the Kalamazoo Mud Run, one team decided to run in honor of someone special.

Sheryl Price passed away suddenly this past spring- a fact that left many loving family and friends saddened.

As an avid athlete and social spirit, many loved ones would miss her company at numerous future events, including the 2017 Kalamazoo Mud Run. However, in spite of the grief, over 30 people prepared and gathered on Saturday, June 10th to honor their loved one, Sheryl Price.

#TeamMudRun first heard about the story at Packet Pickup while a number of volunteers were helping the team members retrieve their packets. As event-day approached, the volunteers and staff were inspired after many shared stories with one another of the spirit behind these sharply dressed individuals.

When asked about the genesis of the team, one team member notes:

My friend asked me if I wanted to do the Kalamazoo Mud Run, and then we invited others and thought of the team name, and from there it just snowballed. People everywhere wanted to be a part of it.

When asked about why they ran in honor of Sheryl, one team-member said:

She loved to run. Many of the people who ran this year have run an event with her before, or trained with her.

"[Sheryl] was a kind, hard-working, motivated, determined person who was devoted to her family and loved her husband and children. She was a wonderful friend and was so full of joy..."

Definitely a person worth running for. But still, one might wonder: "what's the story behind the team name?" As one team-member put it:

"I think of what angels do- they protect and love and support. That's where [the name] came from- wanting to protect and love Sheryl's family and each other as friends."

As large events focus on getting bigger; expanding budgets, planning marketing platforms, and reaching more participants, we are honored to take a moment and listen. The story of Sheryl's Angels is inspiring to us- and we hope it is for you, too.

After the event, many members of the team went on to tell staff and volunteers: "...We'll be bigger next year!"

We're counting on it, Angels!

Sheryl's Angels' 3 teams- a collective size much larger than any other, completed the Kalamazoo Mud Run with an average race time of 1:10:00, finishing at 22nd out of 34.
